SHAKESPEARE

Chicago police districts are duly numbered as in any proper police department, but they are interchangeably referred to by name, usually borrowed from a nearby street, park, or other geographic feature: Town Hall, Chicago Lawn, Grand Crossing. As the city pushed north in the course of the 1800s, a series of streets on the North Side was named by some forgotten cultural aspirant after great literary figures, leaving succeeding generations to puzzle over Goethe Street (generally pronounced “Goath” or “Goaty”) and wonder who Schiller, Homer, and Dickens might have been. The Fourteenth District, now centered at 2150 North California Avenue in a socially and ethnically mixed area with a large Hispanic population, takes its name from the cross street just south of it, a little-traveled residential avenue named for a man whom even most occupants of the lock-up could probably identify: the Bard of Avon, who lends his name to what must be the most grandly named police station in the country.
