Chapter Twenty-Four

Therese, Queen of the Thobis

Her voice had a definite waver in it, but it was still strong, nonetheless. She leaned forward and looked at Alex with interest. “Your accent is odd to me, though. You must come from a different time.”

“I came originally from the twenty-first century,” Alex answered.

Her head rocked back. “That far, eh? We left that world behind late in the nineteenth century. I have only spoken in the language of the thobis for many generations now, so forgive me if I lose my grasp on the mother tongue here and there.”

“You’re doing fine,” Alex said.

The old woman’s sharp eyes took in the rest of Alex’s group. “Did Earth change so much over the next few hundred years that people have evolved in such different ways? Are there many the size of your giant, now?”

“It is a very long story, which I am happy to tell you if you wish. The short version is that I traveled forward in time many millennia, where I met Versa-eh, and Torana.” He nodded at each of them. “My daughters are Sanda and Amy. This young woman is Mickey and she and Beldin are of Astora. The man on the end is Hawthorne. He came from England several hundred years before your time.”

“Isn’t this fascinating? So many different races and people from so many different times. We haven’t had company here in many years. Having the thobis to protect me is wonderful and keeps me safe, but it does make it quiet around here.” She looked up at the huge hairy creatures that guarded her. Alex could only describe her expression as love and affection. “They are my best friends, but they are not much for conversation.”

“You said we left that life behind in the late nineteenth century. Are there others here with you from that time?”

“No longer. My husband, Claude died...” she hesitated, grasping for an answer. “Well, I don’t know how long ago. Many, many years ago. Like so many on Astora, we came here by accident. Our ship was captured and taken to another island. We were put to work as slaves, but escaped. When we washed up here on Andio, we approached the island from the northwest direction. We thought perhaps the whole island was deserted. It wasn’t until the thobis found us that we knew anyone was on the island.”

“I can’t imagine how you went from refugees, washing up on an unknown shore, to living and being protected by the thobis. That must be a story,” Alex observed.

“It is, but it was all Claude. He could talk the birds down from the sky. I thought these giant, hairy beasts were going to kill us straightaway, and that would be the end of us. Instead, Claude managed to communicate with them. Before long, he had convinced them we were gods, sent to the island to watch over them. We’ve been here ever since.”

Alex smiled and shook his head. “Incredible.” He nodded at Mickey and said, “We are looking for her father.
