"Even — and let's be generous here — even assuming he is genuinely willing to talk to me, what makes you think he'll let me walk out after?"

Grim hadn't been very impressed when he heard the nature of the 'clue' Ty wanted him to follow up on.

"He's a great admirer of your work," Ty said, her face straight.

"Translation: he thinks I'm too good at taking down his kind."

Ty flicked her platinum hair away from her face. It was a gesture that had begun to irritate Grim.

"No. He doesn't see you like that, Grim. As far as he is concerned you don't hunt 'his kind' — you hunt the people others of ‘his kind’ pay to hunt him."

"Then, if you're cosy enough with him to know all this, Ty, why don't you go and talk with Eritch Dragure?"

She made a sharp, dismissive gesture as if the idea were ridiculous.

"Because he wants to meet you — has for a few years. You know you have a certain rep with these kinds of people. Besides, a 'lads together' chat is always going to work better with a man like him. It’s my judgement that he'll be more likely to give you what we want."

If he was being completely honest with himself, the main reason Grim had no wish to conduct a personal interview with Eritch Dragure, owed less to any fear of what the man might do and much more the fact that he didn't really see how any information Dragure might have would help them get any closer to finding Baldrik and Chola. But Ty was adamant and it wasn't as though any of the other information Grim himself had uncovered so far had led them any further forward.

So far their entire investigation into both Baldrik and Chola had come to a giant full stop in the social room of that semi-lux apartment in Kabros Conurbation. No one had seen where they went to from there. There was no trace of them leaving the planet. It was unlikely, but still very possible based on this lack of evidence, that the two had gone to ground elsewhere in the Conurbation. Grim's vote for the best use of his skill, knowledge and time was that he trawl through the place to try and find them there — and if Ty wanted a chat with Eritch Dragure meanwhile, then good luck to her.

To her credit Ty never pulled the 'I am the senior officer' card, merely argued persistently and consistently that Grim was the better choice for interviewing Dragure. When he eventually agreed, it had been partly out of respect for the fact she had done that and partly because he secured the promise that he could scour Kabros Conurbation to his heart's content afterwards if, as Grim expected, Dragure yielded nothing of value.

It would be six days wasted, in his view, but if the two men they were hunting had gone to ground in the byways of the Conurbation, then they would probably only have done so with the intention to dig in for the longer term.
