Part III

Quiet Moments

Chapter 30

“Alright, everyone. There are several issues to deal with, and I have no patience for dawdling so I’m going to be getting right into them,” Evelyn said, her eyes scanning over the women in the audience as she did so. They hadn’t left Furnace yet, but they would be in the next two days, which was why she was doing this now.

“First of all, seventeen of you have left at this point, eighteen if we include Kirinil’s banishment. Just to make things absolutely clear, I had Zelirana banish her because she was being a manipulative bitch who would have happily ripped out all of your souls in the pursuit of power. I didn’t want to deal with her, so had her banished. If she comes back, I’ll probably destroy her,” Evelyn said bluntly, sitting on the edge of a table as she tapped her foot slowly. “Not the nicest thing to do, but you reap what you sow, and I’m not putting up with people causing trouble. That leaves twenty-nine of you aboard the ship, but we’ve got another problem to deal with.”

Evelyn activated a hologram, which brought up the home page of Issek Industries from the datanet, showing an elaborate headquarters building, a shipyard, factories, resorts, and shopping centers filled with smiling people. Evelyn didn’t think it was an accurate holo, given Mariel’s general attitude, but that wasn’t the concern.

“Part of the settlement with Mariel Issek, who is going to be working off her debt to the dragons for the next eighty-three years according to Xalryx, is that her ownership of Issek Industries has been handed over. Each of you has been given a portion of that ownership proportional to what you lost due to her kidnapping and the ensuing trauma. That means that the two with the largest number of shares are Sylin and Phenar, since they not only were captive the longest, but have no chance of to back home without risking death,” Evelyn said, nodding to the pair of celestines. “There was some debate about me getting a portion as well, since she attempted to capture me, but I got some cash instead. The smallest portions go to Ilyra, Moon, Star, Vaneryth, and Zelirana.”

“Wait, why do they get a portion?” a human woman in the front asked, frowning a little. “They weren’t with us.”

“No, but Mariel paid for their kidnappings and put them through the initial stages of conditioning,” Evelyn informed her. She’d rather not be having this discussion, but someone had to do it. “Even if you combined all of their shares, that is less than one percent of what the least of you received. I may not necessarily agree with the draconic insistence on quantifying the harm each of you sustained, but they appear to have been scrupulously fair about disbursing them appropriately.”

Ilyra’s raised hand caught Evelyn’s eye, and she nodded to the celestine. Ilyra stood up carefully, perfectly poised despite the attention she was drawing.

“If I may… what about the others that you rescued with us?” Ilyra asked calmly.
