Chapter 10
CLOVER
Wh0 knew a family luncheon could turn into such a shitshow?
Leaning back against the edge of the pool, I couldnât take my eyes off Will swimming laps. He glided through the water like he was born in it, without making a single sound or splash. His strokes were perfect.
Just like he was.
Christ, I knew I shouldnât be getting attached, but how could I not? How could any woman resist him? Smart, kind, sexy, and freaking hotter than hell. And heâd dropped out of school to take care of his sister. He was the whole shebang wrapped up in a sexy tattooed package.
âHey,â he said, popping out of the water right in front of me, his black hair slicked back like a stealthy, dangerous animal.
âHey, there,â I said. âHow was the underwater?â
The rest of the party had left the table and were gathered in small groups around the pool, chatting, while staff cleaned up the barely eaten lunch. Family feuds will ruin appetites that way.
âGreat, although I wished I had my goggles with me.â He reached to smooth a strand of hair off my forehead. âIâm sorry about earlier. I shouldnât have reacted the way I did. It was wrong.â
How could I even describe how gorgeous he was at that moment, with drops of water running over his tattoos and down his chest? I wanted to pat him dry and have my way with him. Or leave him wet. Hell, if I didnât have a crowd near the pool, Iâd have let him untie my bikini bottoms and weâd get busy right there in the water.
Either way, I wanted him. What was that man doing to me?
And I hated that he felt the need to apologize to me. In any other world he would have been free to deck the shit out of someone like Rob. I didnât like what this situation was doing to him. I doubted he did, either.
âHey, whaddya say we dry off and go for a walk?â I offered.
âLetâs do it,â he said, wet muscles bunching while he jumped out of the pool. He turned and, taking me by both hands, lifted me out in one graceful motion. We put on our flip-flops to walk the gravel path, and holding hands, I led him to some old stables on our property, my absolute favorite thing about my parentsâ home. They were long abandoned but perfect for playing in when my sister and I were kids. I hadnât visited them in a while and guessed theyâd be more ramshackle than ever. But that was part of their charm.
âWow, look at this place,â Will said as he ducked below the doorframe, his eyes wide. âDid you guys keep horses here?â
âNope. We did not. These were here long before my family took over the property. I donât think there have been horses here for a hundred years,â I told him. âWhen Dad bought this place, a lot of it was pretty old. I remember even as a little kid, there was a lot of renovation going on all the time.
