âYouâre quiet tonight,â I remark when we start walking into Moonieâsâa small pizza joint downtown.
âSorry, itâs been a rough couple of nights at the house. Dadâs been doing what he always does,â Reed mumbles.
âBeing a dick?â she responds.
âNot sure that fully sums it up, but yeah. Iâve been trying to get Mom to move out with me, but Iâm not getting anywhere.â
âYouâre not going back to school next year, are you, Reed?â
âHow is it you always know shit about me no one else manages to see, Bluebird?â
âMaybe I just look closer than anyone else,â I tell him, and I truly believe that.
âI like that you do,â he says kissing the top of my head.
I donât know where Reed and I are headed, but I know being with him feels right. It feels good. We walk inside and spot Jake and Katie right away.
âHey!â Katie cries, waving like a madwoman. Sheâs happier than Iâve seen her since the day Jake left, maybe even before that because she thinks Jake leaving is a thing of the past. One look at Jake and Iâm not so sure. He looks dejected.
âHey,â Reed and I answer together, settling in the booth and sitting across from our friends.
âHey, man,â Jake says as he and Reed share what I call a âman-shakeââwhich is more alpha-male than a regular handshake.
âGood to see you back, Jake,â Reed says, and I wonder if Iâm the only person at this table who can see that Jakeâs not happy.
âNot like there were many places to go after the epic fail in Austin,â he mutters and I see Katie flinchâReed and Jake donât and I canât figure out if thatâs a good thing or a bad thing.
âEveryone draws a bad horse once in a while, Jake. Doesnât mean your career is over.â
âI drew the best horse, man. I just choked,â he responds, sounding disgusted with himself. âLetâs just let it go. I donât want to talk about this bullshit,â he adds. âI couldnât believe it when Katie told me the two of you were dating already,â he says and his gaze locks on me and I shift uncomfortably.
âI donât know that you can say weâre dating,â I mumble, feeling uncomfortable.
âI would,â Reed says, casting me a hard look that is full of questions that Iâm not ready to answer.
âSlow, remember?â I whisper.
He leans in, his arm snaking around to pull me into his body, enveloping me in his warmth and heat. He nuzzles my neck, kissing my skin in a heated path that I feel deep inside of me. âIf we go any slower, Bluebird, weâll die of old age before we get a chance to get to the good stuff,â he purrs against my ear. His words rob my breath and make my heart stutter in my chest.
My chest feels tight and the air around us seems to thicken. When we pull apart our gazes are locked on one another. My mouth goes dry, and I try to figure out what to say next when Katie breaks the tension between us.
