âYour brotherâs home really does feel like a refuge,â Charlotte said as she and Wade crossed the threshold of the Riverside Inn.
âYeah, well, for the time being, letâs not take safety for granted. Not even here.â Wade turned and gave the parking area a quick visual scan before closing the door and engaging the heavy-duty lock. âPaul Boutin wonât get paid until youâre dead, so heâs not going to quit coming after you. Aside from earning his pay, heâs got a reputation to defend.â
Charlotte drew in a deep breath and tried to settle her nerves. The shooting was the third time sheâd been targeted for attack in just as many days. She was fairly certain her sister was in debt to some very dangerous men. And it was possible that Dinah had set things up to make it look like Charlotte had stolen money from the resort.
Happy barks and the sound of dog toenails tapping on the wooden floor greeted them as the resident canines bounded out of the first-floor office and hurried over to offer a boisterous welcome. That helped to lift Charlotteâs spirits a little.
After the animals were settled down, she heard Maribelâs voice coming from the office. She wore an earpiece and apparently spoke to someone on the phone while pacing in front of an open laptop on Connorâs oversize desk. âI just found out that Miller has an ex-wife in that area. Iâm texting you her address right now.â
âYour mom is on the phone with Connor and Danny.â A female voice came from the living room.
A woman with reddish-blond hairâwho looked a lot like Danny Ryanâgot up from one of the deep cushioned sofas, lifting an elderly-looking black cat from her lap as she stood. âThe guys were going to help you out tonight if you got a call from your informant, but then they got a call on their own case and had to take off to hopefully catch their fugitive. So youâve got me instead.â She offered Charlotte a bright smile. âJack would have come, too, but he got a call from Milo and Katherine requesting an assist, so of course he had to respond to that. The way things are going, maybe everybody will catch their fugitives today.â
âThat would be fantastic,â Charlotte said.
âIâm Hayley Ryan Colter.â She offered Charlotte another smile. âI understand you could use some help right now.â
Charlotte nodded. âYes. Thank you.â
Hayleyâs smile settled into a more serious expression. âI know it can be horrifying to have someone trying to kill you. I really know. Iâve had it happen to me. At times it can look like they have the upper hand, that they have an insurmountable advantage because they skulk in the shadows and repeatedly take you by surprise. But most of them arenât as brilliant as they believe they are. And they canât skulk forever. When the pressure of trying to evade the copsâand usâgets them tired, they start to make mistakes.â
âMost of them. You said most of them arenât so brilliant.
