Chapter 6

We talked the matter over and could have settled the war in thirty minutes had it been left to us.

- Unknown Confederate Soldier

Since the captain had turned her whole world around, she found it hard to work the next day. Fluttering in her belly every time she thought of him caused her attention to stray from the goings-on of the men at Camp Jackson.

The soldiers had welcomed them with open arms, glad to have extra blankets and baskets of fruit. Hester promised them they would provide fresh vegetables and fruit twice a week, and bring more clothing and supplies the minute they were donated to the Ladie’s Aid Society.

For two weeks, Hester and Mollie spent Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Camp Jackson. Then, all of a sudden they were instructed to come only once a week on Monday. One of the soldiers, Darren Marcus, gave them a rough idea why. “We will be heavily training for the next few weeks, so there will only be a few soldiers in camp. We’re marching every day for about five or six miles, and can’t have the two of you in camp alone.”

“Won’t there be others here to guard your things?” Mollie asked.

“Certainly, there will be a few, but it isn’t their duty to take in the goods you bring. They will be guarding our camp and cannot be distracted.”

“I understand,” Mollie told them. “Have a good day, Mr. Marcus.”

The soldier smiled at Mollie in a way she wasn’t fond of. He had been flirting with her since they had started this campaign. She hadn’t tried to put him in his place. After all, he did bring her good information without realizing it, so she was grateful for that.

When the ladies left the camp it was almost supper time. She hoped the captain would be at her uncle’s house for the evening meal. It was hit or miss as he was getting very busy and wasn’t always able to come.

She missed him when he wasn’t at their table in the evening. Thinking about their kiss during the walk was always in the front and center of her mind, but they never had another chance for a walk like that again.

Mollie hurried inside, washed up for supper, and ran back downstairs. “Is the captain coming for supper?” she asked her uncle. He was sitting at the head of the table, his spectacles on, reading some documents. He looked up as if he did not want to be distracted. “I never know, dear. If he comes, it will be at the last moment.”

She sat down, a bit disappointed. Perhaps Hester went back to the Ladie’s Aid Society and informed the captain already. Mollie wanted to be the one to tell him, that way he’d be proud of her that she found out something no one else knew.

A rapping at the front door had her jump up from the table to answer.

Her uncle looked up and gave her a sheepish grin. “My, goodness, Mollie. Are you that happy to see Robert?”

She blushed but kept going.
