All day, Tor stewed about his failure. What he should or should not have done. Even as he thought of questioning Miss Kelly, he heard the clink of chains echoing in his mind. He knew the weight of them on his wrists, his ankles, the tight canvas cuffs strapped around him to stop the chafing but it was never enough, worn thin from use.

It was those ghostly chains that kept him within the walls, obedient to her will, until the sun sank beneath the horizon and finally, finally, far too long after that...she returned.

Light clicked on in the kitchen, her things clattering to the bench. Light that drew him like a moth to the warmth of her flame. Not that she had any flames or fires in this house. It was quite strange, really. She had fireplaces, but no grates and no fires were laid. He knew they had to keep warm somehow, and then there was cooking. Miss Kelly did not look undernourished, so there must be some way she cooked her meals. Or maybe someone else cooked for her, so she had no need to risk a fire in her house.

And yet...no one had come to visit or bring her meals the whole time he'd been guarding her. So that could not be it.

He'd simply have to ask her. And hope that she would not punish him for questioning her.

He offered up a silent prayer that Miss Kelly would be both merciful and forthcoming, then took a deep breath and stepped forth into her presence.
