Chapter 20

As much as Fieldson wanted nothing more than to go searching for his son, he knew Neil could take care of himself. And with that knowledge, he knew that he couldn’t shirk his duties as a Secret Service agent.

The First Lady was dying because of him, and he wasn’t going to just leave her there alone, even if every fiber in his being wanted to go after his son. “It’s going to be alright,” he whispered to the First Lady, even though he knew she probably couldn’t hear him.

Fieldson let out a sigh of relief when the other agents arrived, and the EMTs along with them. He quickly dropped back and out of their way as the EMTs put her on a stretcher and the agents covered them on all sides.

“Where’s the shooter?” one of the agents asked, turning his attention to Fieldson.

Whipping his head around, Fieldson turned toward the stairs. “Shoot!” he swore the second he spotted the blood stain on the ground but nothing else.

He couldn’t have been gone long. He was sure the only reason he’d missed the shooter slipping away was the EMTs’ arrival.

“I’m going after him,” Fieldson said, bolting toward the stairs and taking them two at a time.

“Agent Fieldson, wait!” the other agent yelled after him, but Fieldson ignored him as he reached the top and ducked down the hallway.

There was no way Fieldson was going to just let the shooter get away. He might not have been able to stop the First Lady from getting shot, but that didn’t mean he was going to let whoever did it get away with it.

He just prayed he wouldn’t regret not taking this chance to find his son instead.

“What’s going on here anyway?” Neil’s uncle asked as he followed him back down the hallway toward the closet where he’d left Blaze just a short time before.

“Right now really isn’t the time to explain,” Neil said, sweeping his gaze around them, just to make sure there wasn’t anyone else around. “Maybe when there aren’t psychos running around.”

Jackson rolled his eyes as he held his gun loosely at his side. “Gosh,” he mumbled, shaking his head. “You are so much like your father.”

Neil stopped in front of the closet and frowned at his uncle. “I think I’m supposed to take offense to that,” he said, yanking the door open and jumping back just as Blaze came flying out with an umbrella in his hands.

“Gah!” Blaze yelled, swinging it out at Neil.

Bringing his hand up quickly, Neil caught the umbrella, twisted it around, and yanked it out of Blaze’s grip. “Nice swing,” he said, sweeping it around in the air. “But maybe next time, think your attack out beforehand.”

“Oh, my gosh!” Blaze cried, then he threw his arms around Neil. “I thought for sure you were dead!”

Neil held his hands up and glanced over at his uncle, who just raised an eyebrow and chuckled silently behind the boy’s back. “Uh… yeah, not dead,” Neil said, worming his way out of Blaze’s hug.
