The Sanctuary of Silence

We often speak of silence as being uncomfortable or unsettling: ‘you could cut the silence with a knife’, ‘an awkward silence befell the room’, or ‘he suffered in silence’. But this is surely only because we have lost the capacity to savour silence for the value it holds, and also perhaps because we have grown used to associating silence with an absence of something, an embarrassing noise vacuum, rather than being a valuable ‘thing’. Logically, peace of mind will come so much more easily from peace itself, since this is the state that gives it the freedom to be. In silence we cannot gauge the passing of time – not if we have truly relaxed our grip on thought – since it is thought that keeps that damned clock ticking. Maybe we should stop trying to ‘capture’ a moment’s silence and just recognize it to be there, patiently waiting for our inattention.
