Preparing Emotionally
To prepare emotionally, it’s important to spend time reflecting on your baby and your partner’s pregnancy. Take time out for the two of you to talk about your baby, but also to talk to your baby. I know many parents do this instinctively; they may read the football score out to their baby, sing or play music to their baby. Although a baby doesn’t necessarily hear sounds in the same way as we do, they are aware of very subtle differences in cadence, the rhythm of language, that are unique to each individual. Certain rhythms are soothing to babies; research shows babies are very aware of rhythm and can recall certain strains of music, from soap opera theme tunes through to baroque, so the rhythm of the parent’s voice is very familiar and comforting. Babies turn their head or move towards the direction of this voice. A baby who has heard their parent speaking directly to the bump regularly will recognise their voice and feel calmer when that voice is nearby, even after they are born. When my first son was born, I watched amazed as he turned his eyes to where my husband’s voice was on the other side of the room, clearly seeking him out.
Making that connection with your baby on a regular basis, and acknowledging them as a part of your family while in the womb, will also allow you to slowly adjust and get used to having another person in your relationship. Make sure that you spend time doing some of the exercises in this book with your partner as well so you can build a connection with her and the baby, and learn how to help support her in these techniques.
