WEâVE DISCOVERED a few common objections that hinder many of us from critiquing our own thoughts and embracing new ideas. Unable to dispense with the Narratorâs go-to stories, we find ourselves locked in place with the inability to find new solutions.
The more important or treasured a story is, the harder it is to question, let alone abandon. When we believe we are right about something, we stick to it. Thatâs not because we lack humility, though that may be a factor. There are neuroscientific and psychological reasons why this process of challenging the Narrator is deeply unsettling.
Some of these reasons have been mentioned already. For example, our stories feel true to us. We may actually feel queasy at the thought of abandoning them. Other reasons involve how our brains operate.
Your brain is like a shark, constantly patrolling its territory day after day. But rather than looking for food, your brain is looking for meaning. Itâs trying to understand your environment so it can answer the question, âWhat happens next?â The more certain your brain is that it understands whatâs happening, the better it feels. So it avoids potentially disruptive activities such as rethinking your life.
Yet risk itself is not a bad thing. Itâs unavoidable. Life is unpredictable. Thereâs a certain level of uncertainty attached to everything we do. When we take on a calculated risk, thereâs always the prospect of something better on the other side. You leave one job to seek a better one. You invest money in a business to produce a profit. You engage in a relationship to experience love.
Each of those activities involves uncertainty, but each carries the potential for even greater benefits. Something good stands on the other side of risk. Thatâs what makes it worth taking.
When it comes to examining your current thinking to find new and creative solutions, youâre bound to encounter uncertainty. Thatâll be uncomfortable, and we might as well discuss why. When we recognize our triggers, itâs a lot easier to ignore them and press on with the work of interrogating the Narrator.
