Travis glanced over his shoulder as he exited the back of the hardware store. Something felt off. He had been expecting the colder than normal reception, but the hair on the back of his neck was prickling and he wasn’t sure if it was the weather or something else.

He kept an eye out just in case as he wound his way around stacks of wood to the back of the lot where he’d parked, his boots squishing in the mud. The day had started out dreary and was whipping into a fine summer storm, ready to let loose for the second time. He’d braved the roads that morning to get to the hospital to check on Joe and to drop off a load of furniture at the shop. He needed the room.

Other than that one morning in the woods, the trespasser hadn’t shown any interest in Hannah, and he felt alright leaving her alone, especially with King just a few minutes away. And she had his shotgun, which she knew how to use. And apparently nearly had when Ryan had shown up at the door two nights ago. Something he’d heard about after the fact.

It gave him chills to think about how close he’d come to being arrested.

He reached his truck and found his selected wood in a haphazard pile beside it. Eli must not be in today. They never did this when he was around, for fear of being reprimanded. With a sigh and a glance at the clouds, he strode over to lower his tailgate and start the slow process of sorting and stacking the wood into the bed.

Giving the first board a yank, he was suddenly struck by a wave of fatigue that almost took him to his knees. He staggered a few steps, tightened his grip on the board, and set his jaw. He could rest when he was home.

Hannah might have food ready. It was nice to have somebody at the cabin when he came home, even if it was only his sister. He nearly laughed at the thought. He couldn’t think of anyone else he would want around besides her anyway.

He eased off some of the top boards and set them aside; it didn’t look like any of the lumber had broken. Thank goodness. He had some smaller logs as well, and those he rolled out of the way with his foot. By the time he’d finished sorting and stacking the wood, he had sweated through his shirt, despite the cool breeze.

Wiping the sweat out of his eyes with the collar of his shirt, he stepped back and surveyed his handiwork. Done finally. No need to tie it down it was too heavy to go anywhere. He nodded in satisfaction and turned away.

The two men coming at him with clenched fists and dark scowls froze him in his tracks. He didn’t think he wanted to stick around and find out what they wanted. He lunged for the driver’s door and was tackled from behind. They hit the muddy ground hard, driving the air from his chest with a grunt.
