CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“You will all be divided into groups a little differently to those you have been placed in in the past.” We were told. “In the past you were divided by age for your learning, as you had been throughout your schooling. This time, for your testing, we will mix things up a bit.”

I stood there in the place my class had always taken in the school gym, feeling overwhelmed. So, they were taking me away from the people who I had been learning with all thorough school to be tested with people who were younger than me? This didn’t feel right.

“For the purposes of testing, you do not have to bond with this new group as you would have done your classmates. In fact, it’s better if you don’t. Just get into the group and do as you are told by your tester and you will do well.” She told the room.

I wondered what would happen to the people who had left the room, whether they would be included, or if their leaving the room meant they wouldn’t be welcome back. I felt both sad and happy for them. Sad because they might be punished for leaving when they weren’t allowed to, but happy because at least they got out of this. A big part of me wanted out, even as I was excited for being chosen. Having this chance to go through the brain scanner when others didn’t was a big deal. It is still scary, no matter which way you cut it, going through the scanner. After all, that scanner makes a decision about what your whole life will be like from that point forward. Of course I felt a lot of negative feelings.

Anxiety. Fear. Excitement.

We were told we would feel all of these things when we were twenty-one, I hadn’t quite had time to prepare myself to have these feelings right now. I didn’t think anyone else would be prepared either, least of all the students who were much younger than me, and therefore even further away from twenty-one. I couldn’t imagine the youngest students had given the brain scanner much thought before the foreigners had come to our school and installed a tester in each class room.

“I will read out the names for each group. When you hear your name, I will have you exit the hall and go to the van marked with your groups’ number. You will get into that van and drive to a new location. When you arrive, you will follow instructions.” She told us, her voice even. As if this was all very unexciting. My heart was pounding in my chest.

Something registered in my brain through all the nerves though. No-one told us we would be going to any new location before now. I had assumed that I would be staying here. I had assumed that I would be tested in some way similar to that which I had apparently been tested in my classroom. Now we would have a new group, and a new location.
