Chapter Fourteen

The doorbell rang as Ryan was getting a drink of water in the kitchen. He grabbed his phone to check the camera. Owen had left twenty minutes ago, so maybe he forgot his key. Ryan brought up the camera feed and smiled. Not Owen, but close.

Harper beat him to the door and punched the intercom feature on the security camera. “Can I help you?”

“Harper?”

She jerked back and then glanced at Ryan. “Who’s asking?”

“Owen’s sister.”

She looked at him for confirmation. Smart woman. He nodded. “It’s Peyton and her husband, Noah.”

Harper opened the door. “Hi, please come in.”

Peyton stepped through and walked to him. “Hey, Ryan.”

“Peyton.” He hugged her and nodded to Noah over her shoulder. “This is Dr. Harper Hillman.”

“Please, call me Harper,” she insisted as she shook both of their hands.

“Where’s my obnoxious brother?” Peyton asked.

“He left to run an errand. He should be back soon. What brings you two here?” Besides nosiness, Ryan wisely didn’t add. It was Owen’s first official case, and it was in their hometown. Owen should’ve expected they would check on him.

Peyton held a bag aloft. “We brought dinner. I hope you guys haven’t eaten.”

“We haven’t.”

“Good.”

“You cooked?”

“I’d love to take credit for the decadent smells, but this is Kaitlyn’s work.”

“Who’s Kaitlyn?” Harper asked, coming to stand beside him.

“Kaitlyn Colton Bradley,” he told her. Ryan almost added that she was the best chef in the country, but he remembered the delicious meal Harper had fixed for him.

“Oh, I watch her show,” Harper enthused. “Her dishes look so delicious, and she usually cooks healthy meals.”

“She does,” he agreed.

“Didn’t you tell me your bosses’ last names were Bradley and Colton?”

“I did. She’s the sister of one of my bosses, Luke, and married to the brother of my other boss, Logan.”

“Wow, you rub elbows with celebrities,” she noted.

She had no idea. He hadn’t told her about Logan’s Oscar-winning wife, Jade, Luke’s Grammy-winning spouse, Layla, or all the others who called the COBRA Securities compound home.

Noah and Peyton returned with several bowls in tow. He took the heavy casserole dish from Peyton. “What do we have here?”

“Her famous lasagna, salad, bruschetta, and tiramisu for dessert.”

“That smells amazing,” Harper said, inhaling deeply.

“It tastes even better,” Peyton assured her.

“You brought enough for an army,” Ryan noted.

“Well, you and Owen can put away your fair share, not to mention Noah. And before you ask, yes, we’re staying to eat.”

“Good,” Harper said. “I’ll get the plates and silverware. What temperature do I need to set the oven?”

She and Peyton retreated to the kitchen. He turned to Noah. “Checking up on Owen?”

“Peyton worries,” Noah responded. “Where is he?”

Ryan filled him in on the day’s events, including the close call with Melanie Delgado.

Noah whistled. “That had to shake him up. It would’ve if it were me.”

“It did me, too,” Ryan admitted, “and I wasn’t the one behind the wheel.”

“If you need any assistance on the case, let me know. I wrapped one up, so I’m free. Ethan too.”

“Thanks, I will. A woman initiated today’s attempt, but the person hiding in the attic was a man.
