Chapter Sixteen
After some internal debate, Thea decided sheâd wait until Saturday to tell her family about Riggs. The three of them could talk about it, talk it out, over dinner. Until then, sheâd keep to herself, and sheâd keep working on her physical and mental strength.
She shelved her new game concept for later, and pulled out another sheâd filed at concept stage. Now, with Riggs in mind, she began to flesh it out.
Sheâd felt him. Sheâd heard his fingers scratching at her locked window, but held him back. He hadnât walked into her dreams again.
She sent Bunk down to visit Bray in the afternoons, then whistled him home again. And now and again she heard a drift of music or the boyâs laughter as it floated up to her on the air. Though she hadnât seen Ty or his son since theyâd returned her dish and basket, those sounds of life, easy and ordinary, brought her contentment.
Still, since Riggsâs recent torments coincided with their arrival in Redbud Hollow, she kept her distance. Kept to her routine. Kept to the quiet.
On Saturday, she dipped chicken pieces in an egg-milk mixture, then shook piece by piece in the flour and herbs in a paper bag. Just like her grandmother taught her.
While the chicken browned and sizzled in hot oil, she started on the biscuit dough. The potato salad sheâd made earlier blended its flavors in the refrigerator. Sheâd fry up some okra and serve her family a fine early summer meal.
With enough left over, she calculated, Rem could take some home for a midnight snack.
While she had the chicken keeping warm on a platter, the biscuits ready for the oven, she whisked up gravy in the skillet. Theyâd eat outside, she decided, as the day just called for it. Sheâd whistle Bunk home when she took out the plates to set the picnic table.
Even as she thought it, Bunk came charging in the front door.
A second later, Bray charged after him, with Ty scrambling behind.
âSorry. Iâm sorry.â He stopped short. âThey got away from me.â
âThatâs just fine. Did yâall have fun?â
âWe played fetch. Daddyâs arm fell off. I drew this. For you.â
As Bray thrust a picture at her, Thea turned down the heat in the skillet and took it.
She decided heâd used every crayon in the pack to scribble circles and jagged lines and loops.
âFor me? Itâs just beautiful.â She couldnât help but read him. He was so full of life, and pure cheerful energy. âAnd itâs Bunk!â
As Ty just blinked at her, she crouched. âAnd here you are, and your daddy. Is he tossing a red ball?â
âWe got it from the store, for Bunk.â
âI know he appreciates it. I need to put this picture right up on my refrigerator. Itâs the best art gallery going.â
âDaddy does, too. Can I see the chickens?â
âBray, Ms. Fox is busy.â
âNot very busy.â Straightening up, Thea used refrigerator magnets to display the drawing. âUnless youâre in a hurry, Iâm about finished up here.â
âPlease!â The leg hug, the look.
