9.6 Transition Support

When considering the veteran population, social workers are unlikely to become involved with supporting their transition to civilian life unless it is a complex matter. The military social workers may be called on to provide an assessment and link veterans with external support services to assist their transition. NZDF has a Veterans’ Affairs Unit, Te Tira Ahu Ika a Whiro, that provides services for veterans as mandated under government legislation named the Veterans Support Act 2014 (PCO 2021). The social workers will draw on knowledge of risk and protective factors, including service type and era, and the impacts (or benefits) on mental well-being as a result of service experience and lifestyle (Yeung et al. 2018). Having social workers available within the NZDF who understand the culture, context, and structures is an advantage for this work with veterans.
