Chapter Eight

Ned’s next week was not as bad as he had feared it would be. After he took Liz back to Provo, he had a serious talk with himself—not with Kate. He had no reason to feel sorry for himself. He had a good life—one he had dreamed of during those hard years when he was working way too many hours. He was reaping the benefit of his labor, and now it made sense that he take a little time to relax.

Ned did do a little more checking on David, and he learned some things that disturbed him. He had actually begun to feel better about David that last night he was in Ned’s home, but the things Ned was learning had now convinced him that his first impression had not been wrong. The lie about the wedding reception was not the only one David had told. Still, Ned decided not to call Liz. Right now, if he said anything, she would accuse him of meddling and being suspicious. He figured it was better to let her find out for herself. If she didn’t get the picture pretty soon, he would definitely have another talk with her—but only as a last resort. Plus he had started a new project: He had begun to make a list of “books I’ve always intended to read.” He owned at least a hundred books he had never gotten around to, and in addition, he drove to the Barnes and Noble and the Deseret Book in Orem, found another twenty or so books he wanted to read, and bought about half of them. So he now had an exciting collection of material, and he saw the winter ahead as “the year I finally get educated.” In college he had majored in business but had always found history and literature and psychology more interesting. He had gone through life always feeling jealous of the Ph.D. types in the wards he had lived in. He was going to study the scriptures as never before, with lots of reference and background books, and he was going to read some of the great works on world history and American history. And for fun, he would mix
