Keep an open mind.

Dalton turned on the news while he waited for the pizza to arrive.

Yet even as the talking heads blabbed on about some sports scandal, Tari’s words kept replaying in his head.

Open mind. Ha! Blur the lines between fact and fiction was more likely what she meant to say.

Not going to happen.

He was a realist. Practical. Not one given to believing in fables.

If she and Malachi wanted to buy into it, more power to them, but he wouldn’t. Someone in this eclectic group had to be grounded.

His eyes slid toward Malachi, who sat with Tari at the small table in the kitchenette. Looked like they were praying.

If it gave them peace, great. He wasn’t falling for it.

No, their safety wasn’t dependent upon some invisible god. It was on him. That was why Kingsley had sent him here, because he was strong enough to protect them. Because Kingsley knew, in spite of his faith, that God wouldn’t be answering any of these prayers.

Tari needed flesh and blood to protect her.

Him.

“Another explosion rocked Charlotte last night.”

Dalton looked at the television in time to see a picture of smoking rubble fill the screen.

“Sources close to the investigation have confirmed that the data warehouse that exploded overnight housed servers for multiple organizations, including World Solutions Research.”

He glanced back at Tari, whose face had taken on a gray hue. She looked half a step from passing out. “You good?”

A tremor worked her jaw. “The servers… all our research… gone.”

He wasn’t a businessman, but he guessed this would be a deathblow to World Solutions Research. First the lab and now this. How would they recover when everything was gone?

Tari pushed up from the table and came to join him on the sofa. “If I hadn’t downloaded all our files, the Peter Project would be over. I wouldn’t be able to rebuild it. Not on my own.”

“Police are looking for this woman.” The anchor’s severe tone drew Dalton’s attention back to the screen, where a picture of Tari dominated the space. “Nefetari Salah is wanted for questioning related to the bombings of both the World Solutions Research facility and data warehouse. She’s allegedly a person of interest in two unrelated homicides as well. The FBI is offering a fifty-thousand dollar reward for information regarding her whereabouts.”

A phone number appeared on the screen underneath the anchor’s serious face.

Fifty thousand.

The number settled in his gut like a boulder.

That was a lot of money. It increased the pressure on them significantly.

The couch shifted as Tari leaned forward, her eyes larger than he’d ever seen them.

“Why is this happening?” Tari’s voice broke. “They’re making me look like some kind of criminal. I didn’t do anything wrong!”

Yesterday he would have doubted those words, but now, after spending the last sixteen hours or so with her, he found her as unlikely a candidate for terrorism as he’d ever seen.

Although really, what did he know about her?

Still, his gut told him she was an innocent woman caught up in a scheme much bigger than she was.
