Chapter Thirteen

Lenora

Obviously, I’m not a monster. So, there I was, making the choice we all scream at the telly for when the characters make the wrong decision, but also the morally good one that almost certainly gets you killed.

I managed, hideously I might add, to squeeze through the near throat-slitting thorns. I felt another barrier, an invisible one, as I crossed. It clutched and crushed me but not enough to hinder me. I finally made it out onto the human side, it felt wrong and sickening only adding to the stinging cuts across my face, chest, and arms. I found a little nook where I waited until the sun started to set, headed into the deserted village and into a servant's service door down some tunnel with a metal gate.

I was thankful for the ball the soldiers mentioned because it left most of the village and outer castle pretty quiet. I did come across a few guards who were now sleeping in a ditch awaiting the dreaded moment they would wake with a splitting headache.

It didn’t take long for me to find her after coming through the servant's quarters. I passed through a vast kitchen full of copper pots, double sinks, and four-chambered ovens before I found myself in a darkened corridor. I snuck into an alcove occupied by a hideous bust.

I saw her in the dim light coming through the high, narrow windows lining the upper wall. It highlighted her cobbled ears. She conversed with a group of other women. One was crying, who she was trying to console and telling to be quiet at the same time. When the conversation was over, Demi broke away heading in my direction whilst the others left through some doors that I couldn’t make out. She was walking so fast that I had to be quick. The moment I heard her dress fluttering past, I snaked my arm around her waist and placed my other hand on her mouth. To ease her fear, I spoke quickly and quietly into her ear.

“It’s Lenora, Demi. Please don’t scream.”

Demi nodded her head, so I let her go. She turned to face me and whispered.

“What in the name of Dagda have you come back for? You got out.”

“I’m here for you. We don’t have much time, but I’ll quickly explain. I know who you are. Lusian and Rendal think you’re dead, and Lionel and Simon are planning to rape you tomorrow night whilst Gidas is preoccupied with some new girls.” In the dim light, I could see her wide eyes and quick, shallow breaths in her chest.

“You…came back for me?”

“Yes, I’ll explain in full later. I’ve been in Wychwood this whole time, but we need to move now. Because there’s something I need to do before we go.”

“What about the other women?” Demi looked torn. She wanted to get out of this place but felt guilty leaving the others.

“I’m not planning on leaving them here, I just can’t do anything tonight. This plan of mine was pretty spur of the moment.
