Chapter 11

H ow many more mornings could I avoid my parents by exercising and then rushing out of the house because I was running late?

I wasn't sure, but at least my unhealthy coping mechanism was leading to some increases in my physical health. I wasn't huffing and wheezing nearly as much, and I'd stopped needing to walk and catch my breath.

I was on my second mile of the morning when my thoughts turned to the Stone investigation. Now that both Angela and Evan were dead, we needed to consider a new set of motives. Instead of looking at reasons for Angela's murder, perhaps there was a reason someone wanted both of them dead. They were a young couple and didn't have much to their names, except for their house. I frowned. That wasn't it. They were four years into a thirty-year mortgage. Was the land more valuable than they knew? Was something buried under the lawn or hidden in the basement? There had been no signs of digging in the yard and the house itself hadn't looked like it had been searched.

But I hadn't seen the basement yet. I wonder if Jack had. He said he'd looked through the house before he brought me in to see Evan and I hadn't questioned how thorough he'd been. I could ask once I got into the office.

What else might they have of value? Investments? A safe deposit box? Land they owned somewhere else?

I blew out a breath. There was no evidence they'd been murdered for something they owned. What about jealousy?

Why else were people murdered? I had a hard time believing either of them had made someone so angry they wanted to kill one of them, never mind both of them.

The bottom line was, I was out of my depth trying to figure out motive—I'd never even been good at figuring out whodunit in books or movies—a fact George never tired of laughing at me about. He'd have a field day if he ever learned I was a PI.

I supposed I didn't have to work out motivations and clues and all that, I was a human lie detector. All I had to do was read someone's thoughts and determine if they killed either or both of the Stones. In theory, that was great, but I couldn't just scan a crowd of people and find a killer. They had to actively be thinking about the murder.

I hadn't tried to listen to more than one or two people's thoughts at a time, either. I had the impression I'd be overwhelmed with debilitating vertigo until I could shut out all the thoughts again. Although, I'd felt fine since I came to the island.

I picked up my pace a little. At some point I'd have to chase down a suspect and I'd hate to lose them because I was out of shape.

By the time I got home, sweat was streaming off my face but I felt fantastic. I'd run two miles without stopping, and hell, I'd even sped up for the last half mile.
