CHAPTER 12
SILVERTHORN
Father Malachi Burke fit into our team like he had been there forever. We got him set up in the guest room on the second floor. âLovely little home you have here,â he said, setting his bag down.
He and my father hit it right off. They were like long-lost friends, chatting over strong coffee, watching American Football, which my dad delighted in telling Father Burke how the game was played.
Even Garret liked him, and Father Burke got a few smiles out of our serious vampire with his tales of hunting demons in Europe.
Dad joined us for the morning meeting today to figure out a few things before they left. He declined to take the seat at the head of the table. Dallas still refused to sit there, saying it was my seat. I refused to sit there because I was being obstinate.
Dallas looked over at us. âItâs been quiet since we got back. Too quiet. I feel like we are in a holding pattern. With Oren leaving and Halloween approaching, we will need to be extra vigilant.â
âDad, I donât want you to worry about us. We will be fine,â I said, looking down at the table. âWeâve got a full team. Father Burke is getting up to speed in record time.â
âI love the holy water gun. Feel like a kid again when I practice,â Father Burke said with a grin. âAnd the town is lovely. A wonderful place. I feel quite at home here.â
âGood, and we love having you on the team,â Dad said. âListen, if you need me for anything, Iâll have a satellite phone with me. I can call out a helicopter and be back in hours.â
âDonât you dare. Mom would kill you if you ruined her vacation,â I said, pointing at him.
âWell, donât go getting into any trouble,â Dad said, with a grin, âdarling daughter.â
âListen, we are going to need some help. There have been some tips to Comstock that Sarahâs been sighted around town. I think itâs time I go out to meet Silverthorn, donât you?â
Dallas said.
âI donât knowâ¦he barely knows you,â Dad said with a frown.
âI went to school with Randy and lived on the mountain my whole life. Itâs Beth he doesnât know. Plus, he doesnât trust women,â Dallas said.
âWell, Iâm going then. If Iâm going to take over as soon as this is gone,â I said, crossing my arms across my chest. âHeâs going to have to meet me.â
âFair enough. Don't get sassy with him.â Dad lifted an eyebrow.
I shook my head. âIâm not sassy, Dad. Iâm strong-willed. And if you want a ride to the airport, you had better be nice to me,â I said, teasing him.
âOkay. If thatâs what you want to call it.â Dad shrugged.
âHave a good time, Oren. Enjoy your retirement,â Garret said.
âYeah boss. Go get a tan,â Beau joked.
We all laughed, and I wondered how the old man was going to handle flying economy. It had probably been a while.
