“Why aren’t we doing this more often?” he murmured later, when they had finished and lay on their sides, spent from their exertions. He spooned her, wrapping an arm around her waist and kissing the top of her head.

“I’d imagine it has something to do with five loose umbra, a possessed gatekeeper, and a mad hunt for an ancient spell book.”

“Oh, yeah.” Theo played with a strand of Elise’s hair as she stared at the fire across the room. “I’ve been thinking.” Theo stood and extended a hand to Elise. “Given the recent events around here, I’d like to assign you a personal bodyguard when I’m not around.”

“Bodyguard? No, I’m good.” Elise stood and followed him out of the study.

“Someone just tried to kill you today.”

“I think we know who that someone was.”

Theo flipped on the lights as they reached the bedroom. “I think it would be a wise choice. It would give me peace of mind, anyway.”

“But not me.” Elise strode into the ensuite to get cleaned up for bed. “And it seems I don’t have many fans among the vampires these days, either.”

“Oh…the grimoire.” Theo sighed, following her into the bathroom. “Are you sure you don’t want someone?”

“Yes,” Elise answered with a sharper tone than she intended.

“You have to be more careful from now on. Always stay around people you trust when you are not here at the house. And for gods’ sake, don’t go anywhere by yourself. Today solidified that this whole ordeal is getting progressively more dangerous. I need to redouble my efforts to find Ronath and end this.”

Elise nodded and turned on the water. A short time later, she crawled into bed and pulled the sheets up. She knew Theo wanted to protect her, but she didn’t want anyone around her all the time. A personal bodyguard sounded like an even greater invasion of her privacy than she was already experiencing. They needed to wrap up this situation and get back to normalcy. And there was something bothering her regarding that mission.

“I have a question for you, Theo. Something I’ve been thinking about.”

“Hmm?” He opened his eyes briefly.

“You’ve known Ronath a very long time. I know you hold him in high regard, and that this has been hard for you. But I have to ask: Do you think, if it were absolutely necessary, that you’d be able to… do whatever you had to do to stop him? You know, if it meant…a life-or-death situation?”

“I certainly hope it won’t come to that,” he answered with a sigh. He rolled on his side and closed his eyes again, signaling he was finished with the conversation.

Elise turned off the bedside lamp and settled against the pillow. She ruminated on his answer as she drifted off. It was not what she had hoped to hear. In fact, it was not reassuring at all. She wanted him to give an unwavering ‘yes’ without any hesitation. She wanted him to say that he would do whatever he must to protect them.
