Evie returned before my pudding arrived. Sliding into her chair, she eyed my dessert and said, âThat looks good. Iâll have some too. One of the best things about being fae is that I can eat anything.â
âMolly will be happy to hear it.â I looked over my shoulder. âJeff is around here somewhere. What did you find out?â
âOh. Itâs childâs play. No problema. But I need a couple of rarish herbs to put in a pouch under your pillow. Iâm guessing Esme either has them or could get them.â
âThatâs. . .â Keir appeared to be looking for words. âA relief.â
âIt is,â I agreed, then turned to Diarmuid. âDiarmuid. Why do you think Loki is messing with me?â
He lifted one large shoulder in a who-cares shrug. âWhoever knows what the bugger is thinkinâ? My guess is that youâre the hourâs shiny ball.â
I blinked. âShiny ball?â
Evie laughed. âI told Diarmuid thatâs what humans call it when someone is easily distracted.â
âIâm the shiny ball in this scenario. I get it. The question is why? I mean Iâm not that shiny.â With a raised eyebrow, I added, âOr ball-shaped? Right?â
Evie chuckled. âYouâre fishing for compliments. Yes, youâre shiny. No, youâre not ball shaped. Gods work in mysterious ways as they say.â
âIâve heard that.â
I mayâve been the only person alive to know when my daughter was holding back. Something about the way her eyes shifted away a little too quickly, or the way she stared a millisecond too long at her dinner.
âWhat arenât you saying?â I asked. Out of the corner of my eye, I could tell that Keirâs interest had jumped to life and refocused on Evie.
âWellâ¦â she said.
I gave her ample time to finish, but I donât like to give people too much time to make up stories that shade the truth.
âWell, what?â
âWell, the sleep-protection spellâ¦â
âEvie! The sleep-protection spell what???â
âSerafina says thereâs usually no question about its effectiveness, but first, youâre mostly human and, second, Loki and the ales monstrum are quite unusual.â
âSo will it work, or wonât it?â Keir sounded impatient.
âIt should,â Evie said. âBut Serafina says guarantees are impossible because of the nature of Momâs nocturnal visitors. She told me to ask the Bureau.
âI did.
âThey said, âSure. We can issue an injunction. But whoâs gonna enforce it? Loki is a wild card. Does what he wants. Heâs the fly in everybodyâs ointment.â
âAnd the ales monstrum. . .? Well, they have no idea how to find it. You may be the only one in our dimensions of purview whoâs ever seen or talked to it.â
âHim,â I corrected then immediately wondered why I was being defensive about Jersey Devil pronouns.
âWhatever.â Evie dismissed the distinction, which wasnât like her. She was usually pedantic about language.
âYou learned all that during the five minutes you were gone?â I asked.
Evie gave me an indulgent smile. âTime, uh, moves differently in the magic world.â
âHmm-hmm. No doubt,â I said.
Keir jumped in. âSo the Bureau didnât have any suggestions.â
âI didnât say that.â Evie shook her head. âThey said, and I
