Palazzo Pretorio

Formerly the Palazzo del Podestà, the palace was altered many times from the 14C–19C. The only traces that remain of the original building are the entrance, the Gothic double windows on the first floor and the staircase leading to the upper floor (in the courtyard).

Palazzo del Comune

This Gothic town hall, constructed 1294–1385, has a massive façadea over arcades facing the square. In the centre of the façade is the Medici coat of arms with its six balls.

The building was linked to the cathedral by an archway in 1637. Now the town hall, it also houses the municipal museum. In the centre of the courtyard is a huge bronze sculpture (1953) from the Miracoli series, one of Marino Marini’s most famous works.

The Museo Civico (>Thu–Sun 10am–6pm; >closed 1 Jan, Easter, 1 May, 25 Jul, 25 Dec. |P3.50, P6.50 combined ticket for 3 museums (Museo M. Marini, Museo Rospigliosi, Museo Diocesano, Museo del Ricamo; j; t0573 37 12 96) collection has 13C–19C paintings and sculptures.

On the first floor are a St Francis surrounded by scenes illustrating his life and posthumous miracles and four large Renaissance altarpieces illustrating the theme of the Holy Conversation. Two of them are by Florentine artists Lorenzo di Credi and Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio.

Upstairs are mainly 17C–18C canvases including a Vision of St Jerome painted by Piero Paolini, who was strong-ly influenced by Caravaggio.
