She stumbled after Jared. Her heart thumped like it was about to leap from her chest. She needed to stop walking and fist pump like Tiger Woods when he won a golf tournament.

They were almost jogging out of the party. Jared should slow down before he crashed into someone.

In the small space between the VIP lounge and the atrium, he swung around and faced her. The angry vein that pulsed in his forehead had appeared and looked ready to explode.

“What the hell just happened?”

“I took control, and it felt fucking awesome.” They’d been holding her down at heel for years. She just stood up to them. A huge inappropriate, euphoric laugh bubbled out. And she clapped a hand over her mouth.

“No, you just made yourself a target.” He scrubbed a hand down his face. “And you gave them a reason to think they have limited time to find you and the painting. That was not taking control. That was throwing gasoline on a dumpster fire.”

He looked beyond mad.

“I thought you wanted to shake something loose.” She cocked her head and waited for his answer.

He stared at her long enough she got uncomfortable.

“Yeah, a trickle of information, not an avalanche of trouble.” He pinched the bridge of his nose.

“We have Rick’s tapes. They admitted everything. The FBI can arrest them.”

“First off, they admitted very little. Second, the recordings weren’t obtained legally. This was off the books. The FBI or a court could toss them out. And last, you implicated yourself as much or more than them. You just boasted about committing a large-scale fraud.”

The need to fist pump faded.

She shook her head, not wanting to believe what he was saying. But the expression on his face drove home his point. She’d managed to make things worse.

He grabbed her hand and took off again. Keeping up with his massive strides forced her almost to run. The automatic doors that separated the VIP area from the main party whooshed open, and chaos spilled out. The music must have gone up by fifty decibels, and the crowd had to be a fire code violation. The overheated air immediately drew sweat to the surface of her skin.

Jared plowed through the crowd linebacker style, and she followed in his wake. Bodies closed in around her as fast as he shoved them apart. The flare of the strobe lights blinded her every time it crossed her face.

A cruel hand grabbed her upper arm. She struggled to tug free. Her other hand slipped in Jared’s. She couldn’t hold on. Their fingers tangled for a desperate moment, then he was gone, ripped away by the crowd.

“No! Jared.” Too late. The music masked her scream.

The grip on her arm turned into a yank, and she was lifted off her feet.

Her captor swung her around. His face glowed white in the bouncing strobe light just long enough for her to identify him.

Klaus.

Bile seared the back of her throat.

“Bitch.” She read the word on his lips as much as she heard it.

Half carrying her, Klaus fought against the crowd.
