CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Temple Mount, Crystal City, Lewbamar

Groenwyn let go of Rivka’s arm and stopped walking. Terry and Char disappeared into the darkness ahead, with Chaz and Dennicron close behind. Lindy stopped when she realized Rivka was standing still.

Peace blanketed them with warmth and comfort. Rivka’s breathing slowed as she calmed. Groenwyn opened her bloodshot eyes. Her lids were at half-mast as if she were hung over. Dery could do it effortlessly, but it took a significant toll on the human.

“Lean on me,” Rivka offered. The younger woman wrapped her arm over Rivka’s shoulders. They hurried to catch up with the others.

We’re running, Chaz reported. The corridor leads to a strongroom under the Ares Temple. We believe that’s where they’ve holed up.

Let’s get on with it. I need to talk with them. Let Chaz go first. He’s up-armored, Rivka replied. She didn’t expect this group to be armed. They were the Humble leadership, the priests she was looking for. She was sure of it.

A crash ahead signaled her team aggressively opening the door. Groenwyn started to shake. Rivka wanted to go forward, but she stayed where she was.

“Red.” She held Groenwyn out to Red. He didn’t want to take her, but the pain had subsided, and he was all business. He was a bodyguard, not a babysitter, but he did as Rivka requested.

“Come on, faerie sister. I got you,” he told her with surprising gentleness.

Rivka hurried ahead, using her enhanced eyesight to help her navigate two turns in the corridor. It opened to an area lit by a room on the other side of an open door. The others were already inside. Terry was yelling something unintelligible.

That hastened her steps, forcing Lindy to sprint to stay in front of her.

Four priests were on their knees with their hands on their heads. Terry was screaming at them for leaving amateurs to cover their retreat. That was poor leadership, and they should be ashamed of their selfishness or something like that. Rivka didn’t catch it all. He seemed to be intent on covering the priest with flecks of spittle from his shouts.

Char stood to the side with her arms hanging casually at her sides. Her fingertips tickled the butts of her pistols.

Chaz and Dennicron looked confused. This was an investigation, so they were nominally in charge until Rivka arrived.

Rivka moved to where Terry could see her.

He straightened in surprise. “There you are.” He turned to the four on their knees. “You think you had it bad with me? Wait until the High Chancellor gets her turn!” Terry winked at Rivka.

The situation was under control since the immediate threat had been dealt with. That left the little matter of finding the explosives on Lewbamar.

Rivka took the oldest of the Most Humble Servants by the collar, making sure to touch his neck. “Where is the bomb?”

Don’t look at the closet. Don’t look at the closet, he counseled himself. “What bomb?”

“The one that’s obviously in the closet.” Rivka glanced at a plain wooden door. “Terry, maybe you can check that out.
