That night I had an unusual dream that left me wondering about its meaning long after the trip to Northshore was over.
Alex was driving very fast in a sporty black SUV. He was cutting on and off the highway, sometimes taking us off-road, with the SUV in four-wheel drive. It was exhilarating and fun as we went over hills, into valleys, cut back onto the highway, and then sped off-road again. I was holding on tight to the grip bar and laughing when he cut through some woods and pulled up hard and fast in front of a hidden little bungalow with a front porch and pretty green front door.
We got out of the SUV and I asked, âWhere are we? What is this place?â
Alex just smiled and said, âCome on,â as he headed up the steps to the porch. I followed him as he opened the front door for me and said, âGo in.â
I stepped into the house and was surprised to be surrounded by a dozen or more darling, little furry kittens of all colors. There was a nice lady there, and she was caring for the kittens and some adult cats too. I looked around in wonder, âWhat is this place? Why are these kittens here?â
Alex responded, âThey are up for adoption.â
âAll of them? Ooh, this one is so cute, can I pick it up?â A gray kitten with a furry white face and neck and an extremely unusual orange-tipped tail was walking through my ankles and purring while nuzzling its face in my pant legs.
âSure,â said the lady in the house, âJust watch out, they have sharp little claws.â
Alex was standing back with his arms crossed, watching me with an amused look on his face. He was enjoying my reaction to the kittens and the surprise destination.
I picked up the kitten and cuddled it in the crook of my neck. It was squirmy and gripped my blouse with its front-paw claws, âOuch, that hurts,â I said, and tried to put the kitten down, but it was now holding on with its claws.
Alex reached over and gently pulled the kitten off and sat it down. I continued to look around and despite the need to have one pried loose from my neck, I was enthralled with them.
âI want to adopt one!â I said.
Alex smiled and said, âOkay, but you need to remember itâs not all fluff and fun,â and he walked over to a closed door and opened it for me, saying, âThere is this.â
I stepped over and looked through the door. It led to stairs leading down to the basement and at the end of the stairs was another door through which the cats came and went to their litter boxes. It smelled unpleasant and was altogether enough to discourage me from wanting to adopt a kitten.
âOhhh . . . right, of course. I forgot about the litter boxes,â I said, stepping back from the open doorway.
âAre you ready to go?â asked Alex.
Alex opened the front door for me and ran ahead, down the steps.
