REVELATION
The sense of focus and clarity did not leave her the rest of the morning.
As she worked with Mrs. Simmons, Mercy was able to keep her mind on the tasks before her, but down inside, the events of the past two or three weeks played themselves over in her mindâfrom her first encounter with Jeremiah and Jess on the way to Sweetriver, to the revival, her overhearing Brother Joseph at the livery stable, remaining behind, the lonely days in the hotel, trying to hold a church service, and most of all the things Jeremiah had said to her and asked her.
She had been thinking about it all ever since. She had come to see that there was indeed a great deal of truth in the things Jeremiah had challenged her to think about. The only conclusion she had reached in the last week beyond that, however, was that she realized now that she wanted to believe.
Over and over, Jeremiah's words from that day in the hotel dining room continued to echo through her memory.
Do you really believe all those spiritual-sounding words you say . . . do you really believe everything you're talking about . . . do you really believe it all . . . I want to know if it means something down deeper in your heart . . . .
Just to recall the words was painful! But she had recalled them, many times. She had thought about them, even tried to pray about them.
But now, today, beginning almost immediately after leaving Doc's office, something built to a new climax within her.
Later that afternoon, Mrs. Simmons sent Mercy to the south pasture, away from both stream and river, where her husband and most of the men were rounding up and corralling a half-dozen of the orneriest bulls on the entire Bar S spread. Once they had them inside the pen, they would have to reinforce the corral with an additional rail all the way around the top, a job that would take all the rest of the day.
"Have Mercy ride out and bring us some water and something to eat," Zeke said to his wife as he left. "I don't want to stop till we're done, and if we don't get 'em in and those rails reinforced by nightfall, them bulls will have the whole thing torn down by daybreak."
Mrs. Simmons helped her hitch up the buckboard, and Mercy took off on the two-mile drive over the hill toward the plain to the south. As she went, she was reminded of her talk with Jeremiah beside the creek. He'd asked her the question again. She'd come far enough in her inner search to be able to say that she wanted to know the answer and was determined to find it.
Was she at last ready to take that search a step further?
She delivered the rolls, meat pies, and barrel of water, doing her best to keep up her end of the visiting that went on with the men. But a feeling of quietude was upon her, and she was anxious to be on her way once more.
