CHAPTER SEVEN

December 18

The letters and Marc and Charlotte’s romance apparently stopped for a couple of years in the early sixties. There was some indication that she took up with a black man; leaflets from rallies and demonstrations, as well as a few brief notes, made me wonder. I didn’t know his name. But it was like Mother to take up with a man of a different color, more for the sake of shaking up Oma and Opa than for any genuine devotion. Perhaps Marc had hurt her or the distance had gotten the better of them. Maybe, as with Dane and me, they just could never get it together and stay together.

One happy conclusion Mother came to was that the only man who guaranteed he’d never leave her was Jesus. In 1962 beneath the hymn “Christians, Awake,” she wrote this:

I am back in the Far East again, this time in Vietnam. I’m prepared to see Marcellin any day now. This is his beat, and it’s only a matter of time until our paths cross. It’s been two years since I’ve heard from him, but I still long for his voice, his touch. No man has ever moved me as Marc did once. Gordon came close, but even he wasn’t Marcellin.

Other than Christ, that is. I’ve found that I must remain a believer since no other God would have me. How can I deny a man who would die for me, forgive me my transgressions? I know that might sound self-serving, but I cannot deny what I am. Perhaps one day I will serve others as I see the women around me do. For now I accept who I am as God accepts me and hope that one day I will be more.
