CHAPTER NINETEEN

The evening wore on, but Anwyn never found a chance to catch her uncle alone. Since she was returning to the circus and the team’s ship, she couldn’t warn Owen after the event, either. She guessed that Veraz might have contacted him since he gave her a questioning look as they left. She hugged him.

“I learned some things I’ll need to share,” she murmured during that hug.

“I saw you speaking to Colonel ha Receithi,” he murmured. “Talk to Veraz. He’ll get in touch with me about it.”

She nodded and left with Feron and Riva. She didn’t see any of the team until they had gone through multiple checkpoints and could finally fly back to the Big Top. She was the first team member to reach the Rand’s Crossing. She paused as she unlocked the main hatch, thinking about the name. She checked the entry log and vids to ensure no one had attempted to enter while everyone was gone.

Jack met her, and she reached down absently to pet him. He made his usual request for attention by flopping down on his side. She squatted, but rather than pet him in the passageway, she picked him up and carried him toward the wardroom. A mug of saffah and a purring cat on her lap sounded perfect after the night she had.

She was looking down at the cat in her arms when she reached the wardroom, so it took her a moment to realize she wasn’t alone. The scent of warm saffah caught her attention first. She glanced at the table and gripped the cat too tightly in her surprise. Jack voiced an annoyed merow and jumped from her arms as she stared at the man sitting at the table.

“Veraz! I thought you were going to wait and return with Mark and Drew after they left Uncle Owen at the Evanere.”

“That was the original plan,” he calmly agreed. He motioned at the mug on the table. “Take a seat. You and I have some things to discuss.”

“I checked the logs. They didn’t show anyone arriving,” she protested.

Veraz smiled. “Exactly.”

He was upset about something and hadn’t wanted anyone to know he’d returned early. “This is because of what Deveron said tonight, isn’t it?”

He nodded. He seemed more serious than usual, but it felt like a different kind of seriousness. There was something else there, sadness maybe. Whatever it was, she slid into a seat opposite him and grasped the mug he’d prepared. She lifted it to her lips, breathing in the comforting aroma as she took her first sip.

“I’m concerned about the addition of Gavoria to this situation,” he began, speaking softly. “She has reason to hate your uncle and myself. Equally important, Owen has good reason to hate her.”

Anwyn’s eyes widened as she leaned forward. “Why?”

“First things first. We identified one of the people on the League side who’s been feeding information to the Hrithain.” He looked concerned. “It’s someone you know.”

She drew a deep breath. She didn’t want to hear his next words but nodded for him to go on.
