Major-General J.F.C. Fuller, one of Britain’s more influential twentieth century military theorists, outlined the principles of fear acutely in his work The Foundations of the Science of War (1926). In it he states that ‘Fear unhinges the will, and by unhinging the will it paralyses the reason; thoughts are dispersed in all direction in place of being concentrated on one definite aim.’ The mental scattering that fear induces is a distinct threat in a combat situation, and even in an entire campaign.

Delivering Orders

A US Army unit comes under fire in Afghanistan. The soldier in the foreground issues brisk orders to those around him. Such clear-thinking individuals can make the difference between victory and defeat in action. When giving commands, they need to speak in clear, concise sentences that leave no room for misunderstanding. Nothing they say must be left open to interpretation.
