“Those trees are dying.”

Scott looked out from the passenger side of his Pop’s truck.

“I know they look healthy but look at the tops. See those dead limbs. That tree is diseased. If those branches aren’t cut out the whole thing rots all the way down to the roots. What a shame.” His grandpa pointed with his right hand out the front window of the old Chevy pickup. “There’s another.”

Scott followed the gnarl-knuckled finger to another tree that had some limbs near the top that hadn’t produced any leaves.

He heard his grandpa give a small groan of pain; his pointing hand retreated to his left bicep.

“Scotty, I need you to take the wheel.”

Scott hesitated.

“Go on now. Do it. Just like we always do. Put us onto the shoulder there. I got the pedals.”

Scott steered them to the side of the road. The truck stopped. Grandpa put it into park and leaned back. His face a mask of doubt and torture.

“Everything’s going to be alright Scotty.”

“Pop?” Scott’s voice was strained. Concern giving over to confusion and a vast ocean of dread. His spirit seemed to vibrate with a knowing fear. Something in our souls recognize death.

His grandfather reached out his right hand and gripped Scott’s hard, crushing his fingers together. “No no no no. Not like this.” Then sensing the end, he turned to Scott. “I am so sorry I won’t be there for you. You take care of your mom. I love you so much.”

Scott climbed up to his knees, pulling against the seatbelt that entangled him, trying to reach his grandpa. Look into his eyes. “Pop. Pop. Help. Somebody. Help.”

Finally, their eyes locked. For several long seconds there was silence as they shared the intimate connection that happens when one soul is leaving. Then his Pop grinned slightly. Sadly.

“It’s not your fault.”
