The USA hosted the tournament desperate to avoid the humiliation of becoming the first home team unable to safely navigate the opening round. The genius of their uniform designs has rarely received true credit. The designers used humor to diffuse the pressure of the situation. The curving lines of the home kit project a plucky, fun-loving confidence. The away kit elevated stonewashed denim by dragging it onto the sports field, suggesting a spirited inventiveness that many feared the team lacked. How good did these designs look? Even Alexi Lalas’s ginger beard looked cool when he pulled them on. Despite their home field and sartorial advantages, the United States were eliminated by Brazil in the round of 16 after losing 1–0.

Jewish Room: I was schooled at Liverpool College for Gentlemen, a centuries-old all-boys institution which was the last bastion of traditional English values in a city which, in the 1980s, was rotting away. Liverpool is to England what Baltimore is to the US. A once thriving port which had lost its raison d’être in the late 1960s and was subsequently crippled by a toxic mix of unemployment, poverty, and crime. The college was the one place in which time had stood still. Within its walls, the Churchillian spirit lived on: England still had an Empire, the monarch was beloved, and all boys were to be seen and not heard. A challenge to any of these tenets would earn an immediate yet savage thrashing of the bare buttocks courtesy of a teacher armed with a bamboo cane, cricket bat, or whatever was at hand that could act as an aide-mémoire. Constant canings notwithstanding, Liverpool College prided itself as being an oasis of civility against a backdrop of anarchy.
