• Ask your students what keeps them awake at night. Some of them are experiencing stress from home or school. Have students write in their journals about their stress. Perhaps they will be willing to talk to you or someone else about their problems.

CHAPTER SEVEN

F = FREE YOURSELF OF STRESS

Lower Stress for Memory Success

“I can’t believe how much more sleep I am getting,” declares Jack. “I didn’t think it was possible, but that schedule you all helped me with actually works. I feel better, and I believe I have a better handle on things.”

David walks in and explains, “I took the schedule home and talked it over with my wife. She convinced me to share this memory information at our monthly staff meeting. That was last week. I was adamant that they listen to this. I even looked up those studies you mentioned and made copies of them. We are forming a committee to look at our schedule. This seems so important at the middle and high school levels. It’s going to be difficult, but we have decided to see if we can change our schedules. On a personal note, I have been getting about a half hour more sleep at night, and I now take a twenty-minute nap at school—during lunch. I know I’m performing better.”

“The exercise seems to be helping me sleep as well,” offers Grace. “The best part is that I’m starting to lose those awful bags under my eyes. I also feel much better.”

The entire group agrees that more sleep helps them feel better, accomplish more, and remember more.

“I am thrilled to hear how well you are doing. I know that I feel better after a good night’s sleep, and I have a great deal more energy The undergraduate classes I teach are very early in the morning. Classes like this one and graduate classes are usually in the evening, so I know how difficult it can be to get into a good routine. But I have always found myself dragging when I cut back on sleep.”

“I like what David did,” interjects Gail. “I’m going to bring this information to the staff meeting next week. Parents need to be told this information and, of course, the kids, too. David, may I have copies of the studies you used?”

“I thought some of you might want them, so I made copies and brought them with me tonight,” David responds. “They are pretty impressive.”

“I can share them at the karate school, too,” offers Jack. “We encourage self-discipline and self-esteem. I think the students and their parents can benefit from the studies. I’m sure some of the kids get little sleep. Now that I know it works for me, I’m sure I can sell others on it!”

“You know, you are all missing the boat if you aren’t sharing Nyack and Opooit’s story with your students. I’ve told them about this class and each week I share the next ‘installment.’ They love it. Many are telling their parents about it.
