GORGEOUS ORGIES

Even the inventors of paradise never imagined pleasures such as those robber barons found out there, an endless variety of pleasures. In the big cities, bullfights by day, and by night, the theater or singing and dancing parties with all kinds of bacchic and Borgia-esque orgies. The famous M. Loisillon,* in his letters to Madame Cotu, a lady-in-waiting to the Empress Eugénie, would describe all the gorgeous orgies he attended in Mexico City, where he was an officer at “Emperor” Bazaine’s headquarters.† And all at the expense of the poor Mexicans.

Outside the big cities, they had their hunting and fishing, and bullfights in the open fields—better than the fights in the arenas, where all one saw was blood, with men and horses eviscerated and trampling their own guts. When they decided to visit some interesting site—a virgin forest, a river, a lake, a volcano—they would muster an escort of troops and order full packs on their backs on the pretext of carrying out some expedition. The señores were on horseback, in white cloaks and broad sombreros to shield their precious bodies from the burning rays of the tropical sun. A herd of mules would follow behind them, bearing loads of all sorts of solid and liquid provisions. When it was time for lunch they would stop, and if there was no shade from the sun’s rays or shelter from the rain, they would have their servants set up tents, and beneath them they would sip absinthe and lunch on several good cold meat dishes—hare, duck, turkey and other delicacies; they would have coffee and juggle oranges, while the troops roasted in the sun or soaked in the rain and gnawed at a chunk of dry biscuit as hard as stone. And that horrible contrast, that display of misery and suffering before their eyes, only doubled their pleasure.
