Chapter fourteen
Mars
As soon as I heard that I could see Mars with the naked eye, I went up to the observation dome at the top of the Spirit of Freedom before anyone else was awake. Well, apart from the night crew. Each day it grew larger and larger, and the warm feeling filled me as I could start to make out the lights of the cities. I couldnât make out new Brooklyn yet, as it was too small, but I knew exactly where to look for it. Each day I continued to try until, with great excitement, I saw the faint dim light of where I grew up. It wasnât the greatest town on Mars. It was just an average little community, but I called it home.
However, as the day approached when we would go into orbit, I grew uneasy as to what I would find down there. In case youâre wondering what else I did during this voyage, I carried on working for Charlotte, mostly running psych profiles for all the suspects, nothing really exciting.
Then the call came for everyone going down to the planet to meet at the shuttle. As I approached the docking area where we were all to meet to take the shuttle down to Mars, I heard voices in the room ahead of me. Iâm not particularly nosy, well, apart from when I need to be professionally, but I couldnât help but stop and listen on this occasion.
âLook, Phelks, weâve been through this.â The strong Australian accent clearly belonged to Captain Stacey Grant. Sheâd temporarily been relieved of her duties as a frigate captain because she was now eight and a half months pregnant. Admiral Plural had had her transferred to the Spirit of Freedom, where we had the best medical facilities. âI donât know who the dad is, and honestly, I fucking donât care. This is my kid, and I donât want anyone else to be part of it! You understand me?â
âYou know it doesnât work like that, Stacey,â came back the stilted British voice of Michael. âNot only do I have a right to be part of my childâs life, but it also has a right to have a father.â
âYou just called my child âit.ââ Stacey snapped back. âFor fuckâs sake, Phelks, that really fills me with confidence.â
âYou know full well I only said that because I donât know the gender of the child.â
âI have repeatedly heard you admit what a bad father you are. Youâre not even in contact with your daughter. She wants nothing to do with you.â
âI will openly admit my relationship with Kayleigh is somewhat strained. However, you simplify it way too much.â He responded sheepishly.
âWell, let me simplify it even more for you, Phelks â you can fuck off. I really donât want a lying, cheating cunt to be an influence on my child, and whether itâs yours or Cartwrightâs doesnât matter. I donât give a dingoâs piss.â
âWe will see about that, Stacey,â Michael said curtly.
âYeah, yeah, whatever, go fuck yourself!â This last line from Stacey was coming closer to the door, and she walked out.
