Chapter 4

Back at the Easy E

HE STOPPED AT AN ALL-night drugstore and bought a large manila envelope with a clasp. It was almost midnight when Aaron returned to his room. He removed his clothes and jumped into the shower. He remembered he had showered three times previously that day.

Four showers in one day! Does that make up for not having a shower in four days?

He chuckled. He put the black slacks and the leather jacket on the floor next to the trash basket. He sat down on the bed and took out the manila envelope and another standard size envelope. In the first envelope, he placed nine hundred dollars inside and scribbled the name "Miss Melanie" on the outside of the envelope. He licked the adhesive and arranged the clasp so when he sealed the envelope, he could fold the clasp providing better security. He placed a twenty-dollar bill inside the second envelope and wrote the name, “Tammy," on the outside. He picked up his bag and went out into the hall. Aaron walked down the hall to room number 10 and slipped the envelope with Tammy's name on it underneath the door. He went back down the hall and slipped the manila envelope marked "Miss Melanie " underneath the door to room number 4. Thick with cash, he pushed it to make sure it didn’t get stuck as he slid it underneath the space between the door and the floor. Satisfied, he left the hotel and headed for the bus station.

The bus roared down US Highway 287 on its way to Fort Worth and then on to Dallas. He lay back in his seat and watched the countryside roll by. He was having a debate with himself.

Maybe I shouldn't have done it. Now, the rumors would really fly. No matter what happens, it was worth it.

He closed his eyes and settled down in the seat to get some sleep. A grin spread across his face. His right lip curled upward.

Sorry, Tammy, I have my own specialty.

Elvis slept.
