Chapter 10

Ryan came home in the early evening, and Mick was with him. As they walked in the door, Ryan called out to his wife.

“Abby! Where are you?”

Abby came out of the kitchen. When she saw Mick, she ran to him, and he picked her up and gave her a hug.

“Oh, Mick, it's so good to see you!”

Mick put her down and stood back to look at her.

“I can't believe it. Oh, Abby, you're as beautiful as the day I met you.”

“Oh, go on with your Irish blarney.”

“No blarney, just the truth. You will always be the prettiest girl in Fall River and my sister-in-law to boot. Too bad you’re happily married to that smooth-talking Irishman, Ryan Lochlan.”

“So tell me, how is Mary? I'm sorry she couldn't be here with you.” She took his arm and led him to the living room, where they sat on the sofa.

“She really wanted to come, but the doctor said he didn't advise it. She lost one six months ago. We didn't want to take a chance.”

“Oh, the poor girl. Is Holly with her while you're here?”

“Holly is away at school. I expect her to be up for the girls’ party. I believe she'll be here with her young gentleman, a boy named Adam Bradford.”

His name sounded familiar to Abby, and then it came to her: Adam Bradford was the young man who Meghan had found interesting when she was there.

“I didn't know that Holly had an interest in him, too,” Abby said.

Just then, the girls walked in the door.

“Uncle Mick!” they all yelled.

They rushed over to him, and Mick grabbed them in his arms, and they fell on the sofa over him.

“I tell ya,” he said, “I don't know which of you is the prettiest, and you are having a birthday soon. I remember the day I first saw you. You were only a few minutes old. Even then, you three were the prettiest girls I ever saw.”

“Will you be coming to the party?” Molly asked.

“I’m sorry, precious, but Aunt Mary can't travel, but Holly is coming. She'll be coming with her young gentleman, Adam Bradford.”

The look on Meghan's face conveyed that she had seen the devil himself, yet she didn't let on. Abby was the only one who noticed the look.

She got up. “Meghan, would you help me in the kitchen?” She turned to Mick. “You’ll excuse me for a moment, won't you?”

“Of course, Abby.”

Meghan followed her mother into the kitchen. As soon as she was behind closed doors, she broke down.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. I had no way to tell you before your uncle sprang it on you.”

“It’s all right, Mama. I'm used to this sort of thing happening to me. I'm destined to be an old maid.”

Abby placed her arms around Meghan. “Don’t be silly. You're not going to be an old maid. You'll find the right man one day, and he will be the lucky one to have you. Come on, let’s get the table set for supper.”
