I saddled my horse and took off toward the river at a gallop. Riding right into the storm.
Traveler was a good horse. He didnât so much as blink in protest.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew I wasnât being rational.
If Sydney had her horse, Reggie, then she was back in the future.
There was no way I was going to be able to get to her.
But if there was any chance⦠any chance at all... I had to take it.
Even if I couldnât convince her to stay, perhaps I could see her one more time.
Just one more time.
I felt compelled to tell her how I felt.
I wanted her to know before she returned to Boston.
The wind whipped at my white shirt. I should have worn a jacket. But there had been no time to think.
I nudged Traveler to run faster.
The storm swirled around us now.
Lightning flashed and thunder crashed.
I had gone insane.
I pulled on the horseâs reins, bringing him to a stop, muttered something to myself. Something I couldnât repeat in polite company.
It was time to go back. I had responsibilities. Things to do. It would do no one any good for me to be struck by lightning out here.
In between the flashes of lightning, I heard the steady rush of the river up ahead.
I was about to turn around, berating myself for not having a lick of good sense when I saw her.
Sitting there at the edge of the riverbank on the back of her white horse, facing me.
Sydney.
Her hair flowing around her, she watched me.
Lightning flashed and thunder crashed around us. The storm was full upon us. Raindrops pierced my skin and soaked my shirt.
I was frozen in place.
Sydney lifted her arm, stretched it out toward me.
I lifted my arm, too. Held it out in her direction.
I could barely see her in the curtain of rain.
A bolt of lightning flashed over her, lighting the air around her, giving her an ethereal glow. The glow was all around her. Otherworldly.
I held my breath. This was too much to bear.
Every nerve in my body. Every cell screamed at me to go to her, but I couldnât get my body to cooperate.
I gust of wind blew rain into my eyes and I blinked.
When I opened my eyes, she was gone.
And she had taken my heart with her.
