Shelley slipped on a t-shirt. “Are you sure you don’t want to go to the volleyball game?” she asked.
I shook my head no and went back to studying.
She sighed. “The guys keep asking about you. What should I say?” She moved to put on her shoes.
I shrugged. “That I’m sick or something.” I didn’t look at her. Just tried to focus on math.
But she wouldn’t let it go. “Brook, it’s been like two weeks,” she said, walking over to me. “Should I just tell them that you don’t want to be on the team anymore?”
I stayed silent.
“Sooner or later, if you don’t show up, they’re going to figure that’s what’s going on here,” she went on.
I flashed her a quick smile. “Have fun.”
A few seconds later, I finally heard the door close shut.
Exhaling, I closed my math book and lay down with my phone, needing a distraction. I must have fallen asleep at some point, though, because the sound of my phone vibrating woke me up.
At first, I was sure it was my seven o’clock alarm and I had to get up for class. But then I remembered that it was Saturday.
I found my phone under my pillow. It continued buzzing, Ethan’s face lighting up the screen.
His call went to voicemail before I could even fully register that it was him calling me.
We almost never talked on the phone anymore. We always texted each other.
Then I looked through the rest of my notifications.
There was another text from Adam. He wanted me to know that Nate and Austin were asking about me, wondering if I was going to show up for the game today.
I stared at his message for a minute before my phone began going off again. Ethan.
I really didn’t feel like talking so I let it go to voicemail for the second time.
Then, I went back to staring at Adam’s text message. I let him know that no, I wasn’t going.
My fingers hovered above the call icon under his name, part of me wishing I could hear his voice.
His text message made me realize how much I missed Adam.
Which I didn’t get. At all.
I’d just met him a couple months ago, and suddenly I missed him?
It was all super confusing.
That kiss with Adam. The constant problems with Ethan.
How was it even possible to feel something for someone so soon? That had never been me.
I rolled over and stared at the ceiling.
The truth of the matter was I was afraid of seeing Adam again.
I really didn’t want to deal with what had happened between us or how he might feel about it.
Not when I was trying to figure stuff out with Ethan.
He was still technically my boyfriend, wasn’t he? At the very least, it wouldn’t be right to go start something new with someone else.
No matter how much I couldn’t get Adam out of my head.
I sat up.
I needed to get out of here.
The room suddenly felt claustrophobic.
And I was hungry. I needed to get something in my stomach.
That made me think about the volleyball team.
