CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

SAVANNAH

A week later when the funeral is over and the family is gone, Camille and I sit at the kitchen table. All of their financial statements and bills cover the surface.

“I don’t know what I’m gonna do. Danny was the one who handled all of this. I don’t even know where I go to pay the bills. Most of them he paid online. He knew all the log-in information and passwords. Did he bookmark the websites?”

“Cami.” I grip her hand until she looks at me. “We’ll figure it out. You don’t have to stress. I’ll call every company if I have to. I’ll take care of it.”

She nods. “How am I going to continue to pay them? Danny left some money in savings, and he took out an insurance policy last year, but it’s not going to cover us forever. Maybe a year or two. It won’t cover us in this house, that’s for sure.”

“But it will cover you in the meantime. Money is not something you should be stressing about now. Focus on you. Focus on the kids.”

“We had a life here, Sav. He made a life here possible for us. This life is not possible without him.” Her eyes well up. “And now what? What am I supposed to do? There’s nothing here for me.”

I approach the subject carefully. “You could come back to Willowhaven. Be close to Aiden and me. I know Danny’s family is here, but I want you to know you have options. As much as I love Boston, I’m finding my home again in Willowhaven. You might be able to, as well.”

She nods, but it’s unconvincing. “I’ll think about it.”

“In the meantime, I’ll stay here as long as you need me.”

“What’s Sawyer going to do about Abigail? How are you going to pay rent?”

“I’ll figure it out. I still have a lot of money left over from Mom and Dad’s life insurance policy and Dad’s investments. Didn’t make it through college, remember?” I laugh to lighten the mood. “Right now, my sister needs me. Nothing else is important.”
