Hitch in the Plan

My eyes glazed over as I stared into the treetops. I felt like Jimmy Stewart scurrying across a rooftop as vertigo took over. The only difference, I stood on solid ground with little danger of falling to my doom.

I dropped the harness and swiped my hands down the legs of my jeans. “I don’t think I can do this.”

“Then don’t.” Toby shrugged his broad shoulders.

“It is that easy?”

“Sure. I don’t care one way or the other. But every guide at our resort is qualified for the treetop obstacle course, so if you chicken out, you can consider your cover officially blown.”

“Aren’t there safety concerns letting two newbies lead a tour group up… ah, there?”

“Y’all signed waivers, didn’t you?” Blonde curls fell into his face as he adjusted his cowboy hat. “Maybe I should hang around and get footage for our website. People love bloopers.”

I shielded my eyes as I gazed into the sky. “I’m slightly afraid of heights.”

“Who’d a guessed?”

“Becky, the course is safe. You’re harnessed at all times,” Lois said.

“Except when you unclip to switch platforms or levels.” My mind fixated on Toby’s terrifying and brief demonstration.

The course featured everything from rickety rope bridges to the circus highwire. Even the starting point for the adventure was a difficult rock-climbing wall built into the tree.

“I suggest you practice before the guests arrive.” He smirked as he sauntered to his golf cart.

“Guys like him are the reason I hate Oklahoma.” I stepped into the weird diaper harness deely bobber. “I think he enjoys our failures.”

“In his defense, his boss forced him to mentor two undercover city slickers.”

“Isn’t that what he literally does every day with the glampers? Aside from the undercover aspect.”

Lois hitched her thumb upward. “This looks like a lot of fun.”

“Speak for yourself. All these ropes and lines are perfect for more sabotage.”

“Speaking of, did you send the newest video to Ricardo?”

I nodded. “He asked Stephen to do his techie thing and trace the email’s origin and come back with an IP address.”

“Wow, sounds complicated.”

“I’m not exactly sure what he’s doing. I just threw around buzzwords from cop shows.”

She rolled her eyes. “Any ETA on when he’ll have the results?”

“No, but this is Stephen we are talking about, so I doubt he’s jumping with joy to help us solve our case.”

“Catching Whitlock in the mirror is pretty definitive,” Lois said. “Question is, where do we go from here?”

I closed my eyes. “Please don’t say up in the treetops.”
