Hitch in the Plan
My eyes glazed over as I stared into the treetops. I felt like Jimmy Stewart scurrying across a rooftop as vertigo took over. The only difference, I stood on solid ground with little danger of falling to my doom.
I dropped the harness and swiped my hands down the legs of my jeans. âI donât think I can do this.â
âThen donât.â Toby shrugged his broad shoulders.
âIt is that easy?â
âSure. I donât care one way or the other. But every guide at our resort is qualified for the treetop obstacle course, so if you chicken out, you can consider your cover officially blown.â
âArenât there safety concerns letting two newbies lead a tour group up⦠ah, there?â
âYâall signed waivers, didnât you?â Blonde curls fell into his face as he adjusted his cowboy hat. âMaybe I should hang around and get footage for our website. People love bloopers.â
I shielded my eyes as I gazed into the sky. âIâm slightly afraid of heights.â
âWhoâd a guessed?â
âBecky, the course is safe. Youâre harnessed at all times,â Lois said.
âExcept when you unclip to switch platforms or levels.â My mind fixated on Tobyâs terrifying and brief demonstration.
The course featured everything from rickety rope bridges to the circus highwire. Even the starting point for the adventure was a difficult rock-climbing wall built into the tree.
âI suggest you practice before the guests arrive.â He smirked as he sauntered to his golf cart.
âGuys like him are the reason I hate Oklahoma.â I stepped into the weird diaper harness deely bobber. âI think he enjoys our failures.â
âIn his defense, his boss forced him to mentor two undercover city slickers.â
âIsnât that what he literally does every day with the glampers? Aside from the undercover aspect.â
Lois hitched her thumb upward. âThis looks like a lot of fun.â
âSpeak for yourself. All these ropes and lines are perfect for more sabotage.â
âSpeaking of, did you send the newest video to Ricardo?â
I nodded. âHe asked Stephen to do his techie thing and trace the emailâs origin and come back with an IP address.â
âWow, sounds complicated.â
âIâm not exactly sure what heâs doing. I just threw around buzzwords from cop shows.â
She rolled her eyes. âAny ETA on when heâll have the results?â
âNo, but this is Stephen we are talking about, so I doubt heâs jumping with joy to help us solve our case.â
âCatching Whitlock in the mirror is pretty definitive,â Lois said. âQuestion is, where do we go from here?â
I closed my eyes. âPlease donât say up in the treetops.â
