By noon, the five members of the inner group feel tortured by worry. But the jumping machine is ready. They debate bringing in the police, but if Roma Resources International are as ruthless as they’re believed to be, they are likely to do something desperate before giving up their prize. And aside from the unwanted media interest that contacting the authorities could lead to, there is a chance they can get Jane out using their own resources, especially if her captors haven’t found out about the device in her mouth – in which case they won’t be aware that the location of her prison is known. One thing in the group’s favour is that the new derivative of sodium thiopental needs to be injected about an hour before any questioning begins.

George is not at all sure that he should be the one to go – rather than an armed security officer – but the story of his use of judo and aikido has magnified in the retelling; he has become something of a legend in the Strachan community, where those who know his identity have given him the name, ‘Reverend Martial-Arts’. In any case, if they are not to blast their way in with guns, which would probably be fruitless anyway, perhaps he is as likely to succeed as anyone else.

Tobie has a suggestion. “Assuming that George finds Jane, bringing her out might still be difficult, even with the help of the machine. What we need is a distraction – something extraordinary, perhaps just outside the house – something that will act as a decoy for the people inside who are holding Jane.”

“What about the Dalek?” says Joe, with a glint in his eye.

“That’s a great idea,” replies Peter. “It’s designed as a very small spacecraft and we could put it on the roof rather than actually outside the house. They’d be bound to go and check it out, and with luck they’d all go. With the help of the chopper to give the right coordinates we could put the Dalek into hyperspace, and then jump it right onto the battlements. Then, when they start to examine it we can set it to self-destruct.”

“What’s a Dalek?” asks George.

“There’s no time to explain now,” says Peter, “but it’s something we planned to add another dimension to the joke we played on the Americans, but decided not to use on that occasion. For now, I want to introduce you to your pilot:Jim Hansen. Everything’s just about ready to go, and when you need a major distraction give the nod to Jim and he’ll signal us. Good luck.”

Jim Hansen had piloted the machine that went to Mars in July and is the most experienced pilot they have. Also, he has already flown the miniature model they are about to use on a number of trial runs.

Hurriedly, he explains to George how they hope to find Jane. “When we’re in hyperspace near Auchenmaig we should have enough power in our batteries to jump to a suitable place inside the house.
