CHAPTER 20

Zinnia’s Revenge

The population of the Annapolis Municipality, adjacent to southeastern border of the Chesapeake Municipality, had reached an alarming state, which caused an imbalance between the number of humans living there and the means to sustain them. That compelled the Venom Society to conduct their next Expulsion there.

Both municipalities were reeling from repeated robberies perpetrated by the citizens of a rogue skypod, 51A. The local population experienced great suffering as a result, including Zinnia, Xion, and Dalton. Eighteen inhabitants from that skypod, once productive, law-abiding citizens, chose a path of crime causing their violation counts to rise dramatically. They were shackled and escorted to the Expulsion staging area.

Kamalei stood before the crowd and delivered her ceremonial opening message.

“Welcome, good citizens of the Annapolis Municipality. I am Kamalei Ricinulei, Master of Expulsions. Our population is in the red,” she reminded them. “We are starving. We are sick. We are dying. We must join together as one and respect the needs of all good people on Earth. And yet, there are those who decide to cross their neighbors.” She waved an arm toward the undesirables as she peered at the holding cage deliberately and menacingly. The crowd of watchers responded with heightened applause.

“Today, ladies and gentlemen, we sacrifice individuals whose behavior we can no longer tolerate. Their violation counts demonstrate that they do not respect the laws of our land. Their fate lies in your hands. DO WHAT YOU MUST!”

Kamalei, both arms held high in the air, signaled to the staging crew that the event was about to begin. Laser lights and pyrotechnics filled the colosseum, indicating the start of the Expulsion.

The undesirables were presented to the crowd, and their charges were displayed upon the big screens. The massive mechanical arm and steel claws began snatching up undesirables, and, one by one, they were loaded into the death cage.

They scampered around the arena, fending off their competition, trying to find an escape capsule to jump into. But the capsules would not be had easily. The watchers were intent on avenging the thieves. They quickly zeroed in on one young male, in particular. It was TeeJay, who was known to have committed most of the robberies around the Annapolis Municipality. He was the ring-leader. His thievery had cost lives. If he got too close to a killing device, there would surely be enough disdain among the crowd for him that the device would be activated. And that’s exactly what happened.

As TeeJay scurried for safety, he spotted an escape capsule hidden in a bank of boulders located precariously at the top edge of a climbing wall. To get to the top, he’d have to scale the rocky wall by hand. He was tough and athletic, but he didn’t have any rock-climbing experience per se. But he was an Astronian, and they were all naturally good at negotiating heights by hanging and swinging aloft. TeeJay was confident he could gain access to the escape capsule unscathed.

He didn’t notice, however, a series of crossbows hanging from the top of the cage, aimed directly at the top of the rock formation.
