11 December 1911, Adelaide, home of the Delprats, Paquita receives a letter

Such a pleasure! Even though her Douglas is now well on his way to Antarctica, before leaving Hobart just over a week earlier he penned his fiancée a letter, and on this day she receives it. Eagerly, she tears the letter open, and she lingers over every word, loving the affirmation of his love, before he soon enough gets to more temporal matters:

You may be sure that I am going away this time far happier than last time when you were not awaiting my return. You may be sure I will look after myself compatible with a dutiful endeavour to accomplish … I had to cease writing this afternoon when the Premier came and now at 12.45 am. Saturday send a few more lines. I am very sleepy and you must excuse. We have had a farewell tonight by the Premier, a great crowd of people attended. I gave two lectures here to raise cash this week and got £60 clear. We have a fearful quantity of deck cargo and are leaving behind some of our stores. With good weather we shall reach the Antarctic without fail, very heavy weather may wash some of our cargo overboard. The men are all good. Au revoir till you get a billet-doux from Macquarie Island.20
