Inspector Lush

The door to the makeshift incident room at the Cat and Fiddle opened slightly to reveal my sister standing disturbingly close to Inspector Lovington. It was not my imagination. Zuzu was clearly flirting with the Inspector. Her breasts visibly heaving, she bit her bottom lip and flicked the edge of his business card off the index finger of her left hand. Then the giggle. And finally, the flick of her hair as she waved goodbye. I forced myself to look for his reaction. Sadly, he seemed to have enjoyed the show.

“Your turn, Jessie. Boy, you didn’t mention how totally lush Inspector Dave is. I fear that dog collar has cut off all your senses.” Zuzu flopped casually onto the banquette seat beside me and made a play of fanning herself with his business card.

“Oh, take a cold shower!” I whispered, as I tried to compose myself. I could feel the tears pressing the back of my eyes. Naturally, someone like the Inspector would fall for my sister’s charms. Like attracts like. What foolishness to think anything different. I had a job to do, a serious one at that. Just give my statement and then we can eat.

“Ah, Reverend Ward. Please take a seat. I just had the most interesting conversation with your younger sister.”

“Older. She’s three years older than me.”

“Really? My mistake. Anyway, both your mother and sister’s statements mention a certain famous visitor you had over after your dinner party date up at the Manor. Would you care to elaborate further?”

“Oh, they both told you about Hugh! I am not sure what I can add, Inspector. Hugh was staying with Arabella. Gordon turned up unexpectedly and Hugh needed a place to stay. He left the next morning.”

“Yes, with your niece, Freya. Is that correct?”

“Well, technically, yes. But they were travelling separately. Freya didn’t like Hugh that much.”

“I see. And may I ask, Reverend Ward exactly when you were going to share with me Gordon Wright’s plans to turn Bridewell Manor into a hotel? Or Hugh Burton’s claims that Mr Wright’s business associates were planning to use the hotel as a front for their other businesses?”

All of the petty, jealous thoughts I had been harbouring about my sister and the Inspector were suddenly replaced by ones of shame and embarrassment.

“You do realise, Reverend Ward, that withholding evidence pertinent to an ongoing police investigation is a very serious matter.”

I couldn’t make eye contact. I felt suitably chagrined.

“I am really sorry, Inspector. I really don’t know why I didn’t mention it before. I mean I realise now that these events might be connected to Gordon’s disappearance. Well, if I’m honest I knew it immediately when I heard about Gordon from the taxi driver but… it must have just slipped my mind.”

“Slipped your mind? How, exactly? Please Reverend, I am all ears.”

Now was not the time to admit I forgot because I was too busy contemplating the touch of his lips on the back of my neck. I was such a fool!
