Chapter Seven

Sabrina was awake long before the apartment door creaked open, signalling Matt’s arrival. After he’d left last night, she’d sunk into a creamy pomegranate-scented bubble bath and had remained there until the water had gone cold while she wondered if she might have conceded defeat too soon. Would Matt change his mind about telling his parents he would soon be a father if she found a way to make him see how much having both sets of grandparents in their baby’s life meant to her? She suspected Matt was far too stubborn to be moved on the topic, but she’d recently discovered she could be pretty stubborn when she wanted to be, too.

She turned over in bed and listened to the sounds of Matt moving around the kitchenette: washing his hands, filling the kettle, pushing down the toaster lever. Then came the sounds of a tray sliding onto the counter, cupboard door opening and closing, crockery being laid on the tray, followed by the metallic ding of what she surmised was a teaspoon hitting the floor before landing in the sink. A drawer slid out then shut again.

Sabrina got out of bed, taking care to move slowly. She couldn’t stay in bed when, from the sounds of things, Matt wasn’t in any better a mood than he’d been when he left her last night.

She paused in the bedroom doorway. Matt, dressed in his running gear and looking fit, imposing, and deliciously exerted from his morning run, was busy preparing her breakfast. She stole a moment to absorb the sight of him. She’d never been able to resist his stubbled, sexy, post-workout look and now was no different. Just the sight of him was enough to make her body go soft and needy.

She resisted the salacious urge to drag him back to her bed for a repeat of last night’s incredible lovemaking. Instead, she wiped uncharacteristically damp palms on her lilac pyjama shorts and murmured, “Morning.”

Matt glanced up and, for a wonderful, unguarded moment, she saw the adoration she’d once taken for granted reflected in his stunning eyes. Then his expression changed to one of reservation. “Why are you out of bed?”

“I wasn’t able to sleep.” She padded across the cool floor to the sofa. “I’ve been awake for hours.”

Concern slammed Matt’s eyebrows together and he hurried to her, ignoring the toast as it popped up. He hunkered down beside her. “What’s wrong? Did I—”

“No, Matt, I already told you that you didn’t hurt me. I’m perfectly fine.” She laid a hand on her belly. “In fact, I’m not even feeling sick right now.” The freshly toasted bread smelled delicious and Sabrina’s stomach rumbled. She’d attempted to eat after her bath last night, but the mere sight of the food had turned her stomach.

“If you weren’t experiencing discomfort, why couldn’t you sleep?”

Maybe what she needed to do was get them back to how they used to be when they were happy and in love. “I couldn’t sleep because I missed you.
