LEIF BABIN

EXTREME OWNERSHIP

I’D SEEN THE books Extreme Ownership and The Dichotomy of Leadership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin at the bookstore for several years. I knew both titles were New York Times bestsellers and that the authors were increasingly renowned speakers and popular podcast hosts and guests. But as I mentioned in chapter ten, featuring General McChrystal, I have almost no personal military history or connections, and thus don’t gravitate to that genre of books. (Don’t overanalyze that statement, as it’s not an opinion or a lack of respect for the military in any form. It’s the same reason I don’t read books about the keto diet, horse racing, or crocheting—just not my thing.)

But the books stared at me weekly on my Saturday trips with my sons to the local bookstore, and I finally couldn’t resist the lure any longer. Supporting print books in local bookstores, accompanied by my sons, is one of my favorite things to do in life. My wife shops online. I drive to bookstores—even during a pandemic with masks on and hands washed afterward.

Two days later, I finished Extreme Ownership—by then also a Wall Street Journal bestseller with over a million copies sold—and it captivated me. It’s a superb read—more of a manual, really. The perfect book to buy for all of your team leaders to read a chapter a week and debrief it as a book club. Both authors are former Navy SEALs who share leadership lessons from their riveting, moment-by-moment missions in Ramadi, Iraq. Their writing style is gripping. Regardless of your opinion about the American presence in Iraq, the lessons they teach are piercingly insightful and surprisingly relevant in the business, nonprofit, and public sector. That may be a duh for you, but it wasn’t for me. I thought I would need to translate every chapter from a combat situation into my world. I fully expected to read some great military stories, followed by me having to adapt the lessons learned and make them relevant to a CMO or executive vice president’s role.

I was wrong—no translation or adaptation needed.

Leif and Jocko do a masterful job of seamlessly moving between life-and-death experiences in Iraq, and teaching you how to apply those lessons in your business. I’ve read thousands of business and leadership books over my career, and nobody has done this better than these two gentlemen heroes.

So, of course, I had to interview Leif for the podcast. Gracious, wise, and, as you would expect, clear and determined on his thoughts and actions, Leif attended the US Naval Academy and spoke to the impact The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People had on him during his time there. (It’s a part of their leadership curriculum.) After graduating from the academy, Leif was not selected to become a SEAL.
